Interview with Jeff Kovel – The architect of the Cullen House (Hoke House) from twilight.

HOKE 3

When I wrote the original Cullen House article I never imagined it would gain the popularity it did. As promised, I have been in contact with Jeff Kovel from Skylab Architecture and have prepared the following interview/bio along with a few more images for all the mad fans!

“I am in architecture, development, and rock and roll.”

– Jeff Kovel

HOKE 6

Jeff Kovel grew up just outside of New York City and lived there until he attended Cornell University’s Architecture school. Since then he has made his way to the West Coast and in 1996 he finally settled down in Portland, Oregon. However, it was while growing up in New York that Jeff realised he wished to become an architect. His family had begun work on a new home and a young Jeff thus developed a new fascination for both building and design.

It was three years after arriving in Portland when 26 year old Jeff founded his own architecture firm, Skylab architecture. He admits that he started his practice at a very young age and wishes that he’d worked under other architects beforehand. Nevertheless, Skylab Architecture has grown into a fully fledged successful firm. When asked what the most rewarding aspect of practicing architecture is, Kovel explains “We [architects] have carved out a niche that allows us to explore and innovate. The most rewarding part of this career is the work which we are able to create with this open format.”
Kovel likens his own design philosophies to storytelling. “We bring concepts to life, each of these concepts is a story,” he says. “The paragraphs are like spaces, the words, materials. Each project is a unique deep investigation into this story telling…

HOKE 4

Our process is research based, and iterative. We look for authentic meaning and relationships. We do not rush aesthetic conclusions.”
Kovel explains that his inspiration comes from many different architectural sources. “I love many progressive architects from all eras of modernism, I appreciate the periods prior as well. There isn’t a subject I would rather talk about.”
As I’m sure many of you can relate, Jeff Kovel and Skylab architecture became known to me through the film Twilight; what many of us have come to know as the Cullen residence is actually the ‘Hoke Residence’, so I asked Jeff about how the house came to be.

HOKE 2

“The Hoke residence was originally built as a ‘spec’ house [This simply means it was built, with the speculation of finding a suitable buyer], or a project built without a client as a development for sale.
After two days on the market, the house was purchased by the director of footwear design at Nike, John Hoke. Following a cover story in a northwest architecture publication, The Hoke’s were approached by a film location scout, a little film called Twilight.”

HOKE 1

“We designed the house in 2006, completed construction in 2007. We have designed an additional residence next door that will begin construction once we locate another vampire”
“This December, we took our staff to see the movie to start our holiday party. We all loved it. We have been receiving fan mail from all over the world, including many inquiries for the house plans – contacts from Croatia, The Philippines, Buenos Aires, and Melbourne Australia among others.”

HOKE 5

There is more to Skylab architecture beyond the Hoke House – amoungst Skylab’s impressive folio is also the following..

  34. The Law of Vibration states that not only is
every thing in a state of vibration, but that vibration is a medium for
    transferring indicators. Anything vibrates, nothing
    at all rests.

Physics teaches us that every little thing is designed up of molecules that are in a continuous point out of motion, or vibration. The speedier the vibration, the more fluid a material is.
Because our ideas are created of make any difference, they are also continually in a state of
    vibration.

Acutely aware awareness of vibration is known as feeling. Selecting very good views and emotions raises your vibration and can help you catch the attention of
the points you want into your lifestyle.

Disgrace, guilt, blame, anger, and detest are examples
of very low vibrations. You can identify when you are in a lower vibration mainly because you sense negative.

Joy, like, peace, and gratitude are illustrations of high vibrations.
You can figure out when you are in a higher vibration simply because you feel excellent!

Just one of the most positive ways to improve from a very low vibration to a superior
vibration is through deep and profound gratitude.

I have a mate who has been a mentor to me for
many years. She is another person who has succeeded in each
and every region of her lifetime. I have viewed her
go via tricky situations and arrive out on prime each time.
I desired to find out her mystery so I frequented her and questioned her a
ton of inquiries. She saved answering, “It is really all about gratitude. It can be all about gratitude.” That appeared to be her solution for everything.
I held imagining about that one particular phrase “It is all about gratitude” right after I left her property and for quite a few weeks
soon after. I knew that if gratitude actually was the solution, and I wasn’t enduring all the points I preferred to expertise, then I was missing in my knowing and application of gratitude.

Shortly right after meeting with my buddy, I was capable to
take a look at my new being familiar with of gratitude.
Correct as we put our Arizona dwelling on the marketplace, the
authentic estate bubble started off bursting.
Houses have been continue to getting constructed at an remarkable tempo, and there were a ton additional properties on the industry than there have been consumers.
I tried using visualizing the proper buyer
for our residence, I wrote eyesight statements, I hung photos of the home with a offered signal — anything at
all I could believe of to activate the law of attraction and carry the customer swiftly.
    No consumer was coming.

I was trying to be grateful, but in reality I was
stressed out and disappointed. I retained observing how a lot of houses were on the
market place, and how property selling prices ended up slipping weekly, and it
was stressing me out (tension and disappointment are low vibrations).
In the meantime, we had moved again to Dallas, Texas.
We ended up in our new property and I realized my husband’s business would pay out
our Arizona house loan for six months. As the six thirty day period
period of time was coming to a shut I attempted as difficult as I could
to feel as significantly gratitude as probable.

At the end of the six months our prayers ended up
answered and his corporation prolonged the reward so we had a minimal more time for the dwelling to sell right before we
would have to make double house payments.
I was so very grateful that for a strong 7 days I did everything with complete
gratitude. I did not knowledge any stress or irritation — just finish gratitude.

At the close of that week, our real estate agent termed and told us we experienced
an present on our residence. We closed fewer than a thirty day period afterwards.

From that experience I realized the big difference concerning
staying grateful and dwelling my life in total gratitude.

When I believed I was staying grateful in the past, in truth I was dissatisfied and inclined to complain when I wasn’t acquiring the final results I
preferred. The moment I seasoned that “gratitude zone”
I realized that was how I always required to live my lifestyle.

Without finding a place of complete gratitude, would our Arizona residence have sold?
Of class… eventually and with a whole lot of worry!

Do I still get stressed, annoyed, critical, or dissatisfied?
Of study course! I’m nonetheless studying. But now when I
locate myself out of the “gratitude zone,” I start off journaling gratitude correct away.
It seriously assists me to compose the issues I am profoundly grateful for.
I preserve crafting right up until I can experience myself back again in the peaceful “gratitude zone.” You can also use meditation or leisure to get back again to the gratitude zone
    — find what functions for you and do it as
usually as you need to have to. When you get accustomed to the “gratitude zone,” you will not at any
    time want to depart it.
