Zaishu – Matthew Butler and Helen Punton

I’m Very excited to present you with the Zaishu by designers Matthew Butler and Helen Punton. The Zaishu isn’t just a stool or piece of furniture, behind it’s lovingly painted slot together sides is an underlying philosophy. The Zaishu represents and reinforces a social understanding and awareness of cultures, how? well it’s designers have travelled the world and have approached over a thousand different people, to hand paint their design.. keeping the ever changing panels fresh and unique. Supplying buyers with their own individualized design.
The fundamentals principles for their design is simple,
“Creativity, participation, responsibility (environment and society) and evolution.”

my zaishu 30 md

So, What is a Zaishu?
The Zaishu was designed from the ground up to be a product that responsibly addressed environmental issues whilst encouraging social interaction and creates awareness of other cultures.
This is achieved by using plantation grown pine, water based inks and varnish and the way it flat packs for distribution. We host socially interactive painting workshops around the world to unite creative people and to exchange and evolve ideas.

my zaishu 44 md

The name Zaishu actually comes from a mistake in translation. What was meant to be Zaisu a name for a traditional Japanese seat, but an accidental ‘h’ was added. However, this says Butler, “sets a good tone for the organic way we run the company – relying on feeling and instinct rather than what is technically correct.”
news 79 img 4 lg

The core of Zaishus success revolves around the very fact that it is a collaborative project, rather than a designed product.
Matthew and Helen have worked with over 1000 different people over the last 4 years from many different countries and cultures to create the artwork that adorn the Zaishus slot together sides.
“We find that collaboration helps us to grow ideas and expand possibilities rather than thinking my idea is better than someone elses or that I can do everything.”

Production002 crop

Hand painted Zaishus are created by artists as diverse as stencil artists from Melbourne, tribal artists from India and Fiji and street poster artists from Berlin. “We currently have an exhibition in Amsterdam with Zaishus painted by a group of Dutch artists. A lot of these projects are not for profit and support a worthy cause such as a school in Fiji or children affected by war in Uganda.

my zaishu 32 md

Also available are commercially made Zaishus that are hand printed in small batches at Matthew and Helen’s coastal studio. The designs and patterns have been created by textile designers and artists that the pair work with.

Who Developed the Zaishu?

As noted earlier, the Zaishu is by Australian based designers, (not far from Byron Bay for the aussies tuning in) Matthew Butler and Helen Punton, a little about the duo –

Matthew Butler – born in Australia, currently living and working from Yamba – a quiet little town on the coast near Byron Bay NSW. Trained in Architecture, Industrial Design, sculpture and gained experience as production manager for Tom Dixon in London during mid 1990’s.

my zaishu 31 md

Helen Punton – studied Graphic Design in Australia and designed the signage for Melbourne’s ‘Metlink’ public transport system and exhibit design for the Melbourne zoo. Helen has lived and worked in Berlin for several years writing and directing short films and curating exhibitions such as the Australian Design Exhibition ‘Modernwhite’ and ‘Sharpies’ photography at the Australian embassy in Berlin in 2005.

my zaishu 33 md

and just to give you a bit of an insight into the lives of these two, how’s this for an adventure, in the next couple months Matthew “will be cycling around Patagonia and visiting craftspeople along the way, [Whilst]Helen is climbing the Inca trail in Peru. We hope to see some innovative techniques and ideas that we can work with.”

my zaishu 49 md

To up and coming designers Matthew offers this, “Forget the rules, create your own context to work within. ie: don’t design a ‘chair’ but design a ‘platform to support the human body’.”

A huge thanks to Matthew for and Helen for sharing with us their obviously very personal and special design, the zaishu.
Cheers from the Design Tavern!

  18. With all the millions of websites on the internet today, there can only be a few that
will show up on the first page of search engines at a time.
This is where search engine optimization comes in to play.
You can prepare your website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of
a search engine. SEO often evades a simple definition. This is because
it permeates just about every area of web site design and development.
    1. Using the right keyword is the foundation of successful SEO.
Keywords are the words that web surfers enter in search engines to find web sites.

It is important that your web site has good search engine rankings for popular keywords that are related to the theme of your
    web site.

    2. Increase the link popularity of your web site.
This is first and foremost in determining your PageRank, which is a huge factor
in where your pages will display in search results for their relevant keywords.

    3. Content- Without fresh, relevant and useful content you will
never see the rankings you’re looking for (unless
you somehow get the best sites on the internet to link to you).
Additionally, keep in mind that if your site is brand new you will not see good
rankings for some time. Google does not crawl all new websites immediately, and there is also generally a
period of several months before sites are fully crawled and indexed.
So if you’ve got a great site together and are displeased to see that you’re not ranking highly,
settle down a bit. Keep building it up – Google will catch
on. In the mean time, self-promote like crazy, gaining
as many quality links to your site as you possibly can.

Take a look at this post and have a guess what key words I was trying to rank for.
You don’t want to change the old permalinks because then any backlinks you have will be
broken. One of the easiest things you can do is head over to Google
Search Console and add your blog. This information is
extremely valuable because it removes a lot of the guess work and gives you insights
into how Google treats different aspects of your blog.
Again, it takes a bit of time to learn but it’s important to have it
    installed from the early days.

For a long time my SEO strategy consisted of just commenting on other authority blogs.
Not only does it get you more traffic, exposure and new relationships,
it also counts as a backlink. Now, some blogs you can leave target
anchor text because they aren’t real worried about user names.
But on most blogs you need to use your real name. Try
and use Market Samurai to see where your competitors are getting
their backlinks from. You might just find a bunch of them come
from comments on well ranked blog posts. As I mentioned
in my post on SEO secrets you want to now have a big focus on social media for SEO purposes as well as traffic building
purposes. Because Google may now be looking to social media as a signal of an article’s authority and relevance.

If thousands of people are tweeting about it then chances are you have written something pretty good.
And the best way to get tweets is to build a loyal following and write killer content that
they just love to promote for you. Get to know the big players in your niche
by casually building a rapport with them on Twitter. Down the track you can hit them
up for re-tweets. Use your social media profiles to add content that
won’t appear on the blog itself.. Think of it as a
separate resource for people to tap in to. Here’s our guide to using Instagram for bloggers.
The more content you share from other bloggers the more likely they are
to share your stuff. Give and then get later. This is really important.

Neil Patel (one of my blogging heros) has just written a really cool list about how to use
Twitter like a boss. That is a good place
to start if you want to really amp up your social activities.
There are lots of WordPress plugins out there that you can install to get some help with your SEO.
One of the best ones to start with is the All in One SEO Pack which does so many of the nasty little
things for you like helping you craft titles, descriptions and
so forth. Then there is the Google Sitemaps Plugin that automatically generates a sitemap
for you to submit to Google so they can see an overview of your site structure.
Make sure you read through the comments
below as there are a lot of other excellent suggestions from our readers about what they are using.

As far as I am concerned the absolute best resource for SEO
related material in the world is over at Moz.
Rand has been doing Whiteboard Friday videos for years now.

I even made a little comedy tribute video to him to
say thank you for how much his advice has helped us.

Now, the content on their blog might be a little over
your head to begin with but you will slowly start to absorb ideas about trends,
tactics and best practices over time. Even if you only check in every couple of weeks and read
one or two articles you will find that your SEO knowledge just grows and blossoms.
What have I missed? Okay guys. Hit me with it. What beginner SEO tips have I missed?
Please leave everything and anything that you can think of in the comments section. I’m hoping we can come up with a nice sized list to help out all the newcomers.
