Myself and two other architecture students went along to see the new vampire come romance movie twilight..

..We made the mistake of going opening day. Aussie kids are currently on their Christmas break and amoungst them, screaming teens, all hungry for the blood (like vampires.. get it?) of teen heart throb, ex- harry potter star, Robert Pattinson or ‘Edward Cullen’ as those who have seen the movie might know him.

Edward’s room.. see more on it here at Apartment therapy

It might come as a surprise to you, that myself and my friends, all in our twenties (and two of us male..) all swooned at one point..

But it probably wasn’t for the same reason as majority of the audience.

I’m talking about the Cullen’s House..

After seeing Manvi’s post for the house featured in twilight over at her blog Mochatini, I decided to do some of my own exploring..

Edward Cullen: “What did you expect? Coffins, and dungeons and moats?”
Bella: “Um..not the moats.”

Well I’m happy to say that there were no coffins, dungeons or moats.. but rather a splendid contemporary home, that’s certainly worth investigating…

architect house6

The Hoke House is by architect Jeff Kovel via ‘Skylab Architecture’ it’s 4300 squares, built by Metcalf Construction, with Lucy Metcalf as the interior designer and landscaper.

architect house2
The amazing symmetry and rough floor looks great, and the (perhaps over used) hanging lamp looks great in this living room.

architect house3

architect house4
The meals and dining area look warm and inviting, a strong use of timber again, simple tables and furniture used effectively.
Notice the floor to ceiling windows wrapping the kitchen that provide great natural lighting as well as splendid green, forest views.

architect house5

The contemporary boxy home is well positioned on the site, the architects have taken advantage of the natural sloping landscape and have strategically placed the home so it looks out over the greenery.

It’s the use of timber that really does if for me, the striking middle floor of three level home creates a nice contrast with the industrial grey of the other stories, and again, relates back to it’s site, fitting in nicely with its green forest setting.

Modern, white and pristine bathrooms

architect house10
Amazing bathroom window/skylight would allows its users to feel very free and open when stripped down and having a shower.

architect house12

The contemporary feel is continued inside the home. The walls are a tradational modern clean cut white, though the clever use of timber is continued into the home as floorboards and on the stairs.

The house is open and bright and naturally well lit through the obvious use of large and multiple windows.

A bit of a side note, Twilight was a great movie and is definitely worth watching, (i’ve just started the first book also!)
But i’ll leave it up to you to decide which you prefer, the eye candy of Edward Cullen or his home.

  1. Tawny says:

The house is fantastic. And I’m sorry to disappoint all of you Twilight fans, but the house itself was probably the only part of the movie worth looking at twice. And um… the Cullens don’t actually live there. You do understand that right? It’s a movie… is not real… come out of your vampire fantasy world.

I really love the way the architecture focuses on the surrounding landscape, and the amazing use of timber, without being overly… well… brown.

  2. ron brenner says:

My wife and kid have brought me to the movie 3 times. I am starting to feel like a wierdo.
Anyway the house is a great piece of modern design – modern yet still warm and inviting. That Northwestern landscape does alot for the home.

  8. Pandora says:

This house is so amazing! I have to say i am impressed…even though this is not how i imagined twilight. This is a ver comfy home. It has a very compatable feeling to the trees and the color. Its like you can hibernate in it.
I have been working on some architecture and landscaping myself even though i am only 15…hey i can learn. I have alot of interest on landscaping at the moment, but it is a good way to start. Anyways, i just wanted to say what great job you did! Keep it up…

  9. Pandora says:

Oh yeah and do agree with “Tawny”!
I think could of done a much better job with the movie if they would just follow the book.
I dont know anybody who wouldnt agree…

  10. sarah says:

I like the wide open house i am also a big fan of twilight. Its one of my best movie=D

  11. nick says:

house is amazing, but fails as part of twilight movie goes, house is supposed to be all white on outside and inside, white and open, they got it all right but should have used CGI or something to make outside the way it was supposed to be even if it would cover up this beauty of a home

  12. Suz says:

Loved the movie and the books but the HOUSE takes the cake!! I’m in love with the screen floor lamp as they enter the house. Any info on that?

  13. Liz says:

Do you think they’d sell this house. And if so, for how much. LOL. I would love to live there. It’s so beautiful. I’m going to have a house designed exactly like this one.

I really wish everyone would calm the hell down. If you don’t like Twilight, then move on and don’t get mad at the people who do. We don’t get mad at your movie interests. It’s a MOVIE. Everyone needs to calm down. Stop saying it’s not real. We know that it isnt real but that doesnt mean that we dont like it. Star Wars isnt real either, but I love that movie. Jeeeeeze.

    Anyways, the house is lovely.

  26. Julie says:

    Great pics, thanks !

I did not enjoy the movie that much, I fell half asleep until the second part, where action begins. I rather focused on the house, yet the only part of this movie I would really like to watch a second or a third time without getting bored!

This contemporary house is the most interesting part of the movie in my opinion. I myself found that it perfectly suited to this vampires’ family: bright, open, perfectly designed to still remain a “casual house”, I mean not a unreal palace or any gigantic Hollywood star’s house but an original and specially designed building to suit a “normal” family’s needs… It very much looks like my own house actually. ^-^

  27. Chris:)Tina says:

It’s really a cool house, like something from a comic book.

  28. Hana says:

    this house is very beautiful!!!
The most beautiful house i’ve ever seen!!!!
    :)

  29. Rolowics says:

I love this house… Where can I find on google maps? :D I know that it’s at portland Forest park, but I can’t find it xD

  30. I saw the movie last night and was intrigued. I like the cantilever.

  31. […] saber mais detalhes da casa, visite o post do site Design […]

  32. Steph says:

While I think the house is well designed and interesting, with obvious high quality features, I don’t think it was suitable for the film. The books described the house as being far larger, especially Edwards room, which wasn’t at all right for me. The whole house didn’t have the ultra luxe feel that I expected it to have.

It’s a beautiful house that’s still warm inviting, while being modern and minimalist – not the easiest of combinations to get right.

  33. Paula says:

I just think it is hilarious how everyone has a pre conceived notion of what a “vampire house” would look like. The house does resemble the book somewhat. I love how the house is bright, open and warm as well, nothing I and even other reader would have imagined of a house owned by a “family” of vampires. Good job on finding this one. True owners of the “Cullen house”…enjoy, it is fab!

  34. Amaranta says:

  36. Helena says:

i want that housee!!!!!!! or at least i need to go there! :D the house is beautiful(:

  37. ash says:

The home was for sell they were wanting 15mil the last time I heard but I am sure they cant sell it for that much cause I live in sandy oregon and homes are not selling for crap here. I love the books way better and I wish they would have gone by the book but who cares as long as rob and taylor are in it lol awesome eye candy

  38. the saga lover says:

that house is amazing, even though the book describes a more modern, refurnished/ferbished victorian white house, this is STILL amazing and seems to give that modern vamp touch to it no? I believe it would be the perfect house for the twilight saga, fi the book didn’t give a specific describtion. But, I still can’t get over the classic modern/retro-ish decor which is amazing, and again I’d like to point out it’s soo vamp!! Beautiful!!!

  39. i love the chemistry between Kirsten Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Twlight will always be one of the best vampire-love story movies.

  42. viv says:

I LOVE this house so much! its actually a tough call for me but if given the choice i would definetly pick the house over robert pattinson.

It really has a lot of balance, and the design of the house itself in and out is really great. An amazing job by the architets who deisgned it.

  43. victoria groff says:

how much would a house JUST like that cost? just curious!!!!!

  44. Girlie says:

I have never been so excited about architecture before (music major) and when my friends asked me about the movie I couldn’t help raving about the Cullen house. Most thought me mad but am so glad to be vindicated and find that there are others like me.
Verdict : worth being bitten by a vampire to live here!

  50. Christina says:

I am currently visiting Seattle, on a business trip, and am planning to visit some of the sites/cities used in the Twilight saga during my free time. Since Portland is only 2.5 hours from Seattle, I am naturally anxious to see the “Nike House” used to house the Cullen family in the first film.

Can anyone tell me exactly where it is located, and/or provide directions. Since many of you that posted claim to have been there, this should be an easy request to fulfill. ;-)
