Fit for a vampire.. The Hoke House (the Cullen House from Twilight) – Skylab Architecture

UPDATE: Interior Images of the residence from New Moon HERE

Myself and two other architecture students went along to see the new vampire come romance movie twilight..

..We made the mistake of going opening day. Aussie kids are currently on their Christmas break and amoungst them, screaming teens, all hungry for the blood (like vampires.. get it?) of teen heart throb, ex- harry potter star, Robert Pattinson or ‘Edward Cullen’ as those who have seen the movie might know him.

Edward’s room.. see more on it here at Apartment therapy

It might come as a surprise to you, that myself and my friends, all in our twenties (and two of us male..) all swooned at one point..

But it probably wasn’t for the same reason as majority of the audience.

I’m talking about the Cullen’s House..

architect house7

After seeing Manvi’s post for the house featured in twilight over at her blog Mochatini, I decided to do some of my own exploring..

Edward Cullen: “What did you expect? Coffins, and dungeons and moats?”
Bella: “Um..not the moats.”

Well I’m happy to say that there were no coffins, dungeons or moats.. but rather a splendid contemporary home, that’s certainly worth investigating…

architect house6

The Hoke House is by architect Jeff Kovel via ‘Skylab Architecture’ it’s 4300 squares, built by Metcalf Construction, with Lucy Metcalf as the interior designer and landscaper.

architect house2
The amazing symmetry and rough floor looks great, and the (perhaps over used) hanging lamp looks great in this living room.

architect house3

architect house4
The meals and dining area look warm and inviting, a strong use of timber again, simple tables and furniture used effectively.
Notice the floor to ceiling windows wrapping the kitchen that provide great natural lighting as well as splendid green, forest views.

architect house5

The contemporary boxy home is well positioned on the site, the architects have taken advantage of the natural sloping landscape and have strategically placed the home so it looks out over the greenery.

It’s the use of timber that really does if for me, the striking middle floor of three level home creates a nice contrast with the industrial grey of the other stories, and again, relates back to it’s site, fitting in nicely with its green forest setting.

Modern, white and pristine bathrooms

Amazing bathroom window/skylight would allows its users to feel very free and open when stripped down and having a shower.

architect house12

The contemporary feel is continued inside the home. The walls are a tradational modern clean cut white, though the clever use of timber is continued into the home as floorboards and on the stairs.

The house is open and bright and naturally well lit through the obvious use of large and multiple windows.

A bit of a side note, Twilight was a great movie and is definitely worth watching, (i’ve just started the first book also!)
But i’ll leave it up to you to decide which you prefer, the eye candy of Edward Cullen or his home.

Wow…that things a beaut! love all the wood and frame less windows. Wonder how it would stand up to the whole environmental design thing though :P

  2. Manvi says:

Wow! I love your pics of the house. Well done! I want this house!

  3. webdiva Chicago says:

Yeah, don’t we all want to own this house! Perhaps the popularity of films like Twilight, for which directors carefully research shooting locations, will expose more young people to some of the glories of modern American architecture.

There are parts of of the Hoke House, including the cantilevering, that are reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater — which has to be the all-time standard for a magnificent modern residence — as well as some of the West Coast ‘tree houses’ designed during the 1940s-1960s by Richard Neutra and others. With their floor-to-ceiling glass walls, extensive use of interior wood paneling, many balconies, and multilevel construction, those homes were intended to capitalize on their gorgeous forested settings and to open up the interiors to the outside. Indeed, the purpose was to have an unbroken flow from inside to outside — thus the use of so much wood on the interior and balconies. Over the last 60 years, many of the homes in Architectural Record’s annual homes and apartments issue included such design elements; at one point, big walls of interior redwood paneling were almost required!

The exterior look of this house is nearly entirely the doing of Portland-based Skylab Architects, with precious little credit to the California-based construction firm: if you visit the latter’s web site, you’ll find generic looking shots of generic-looking homes, and ugly at that, despite their reported cost. If what’s on that site is considered luxury, Metcalf Construction needs a new dictionary.

On the other hand, Lucy Metcalf’s interior work for the Hoke House lives up to the architect’s standard, and her landscaping job for same provides a welcome and appropriate setting for Jeff Kovel’s house design.

All in all, a much better choice of shooting location for the Cullen house described in the Twilight series than anything actually in or around Forks, Washington (which may be why almost none of the film was shot there, and the director instead used locations in and around the Columbia River Gorge). Clearly, there’s no way a period house such as the bed and breakfast in Forks that some Twilight fansites refer to could accurately be a stand-in for the Cullen house described in the book: you don’t get a whole wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in a 19th-century home. That’s a mid-20th-century innovation, as are curtain-glass walls on skyscrapers.

Can’t wait to see which locations the second film in the series returns to and which will be new …

  4. Rose says:

WOW!! yeah i think that the majority of us want to own this amazingly outstanding home! But i do have to say that it’s not the house that makes the home, it’s the poeple who live and cerate memories in the house that makes it the home!..I do have to say that it has been taken from a basic state and has been created into something AMAZING! I know that i would like to create a house that has some of the same features that this house provides. I do know that I would like to have the floor to ceiling windows in my home and that is just something that i have always wanted. Well it’s been nice sharing some insight with you and as always it has been a pleasure to see the outstandign photos and reading what you have had to say.

do you know the location of the house???

  7. tinatinatina says:

the only thing i’d change about this house is the blue color outside.

    but the inside is gorgeous.

  11. SnowyHedwig says:

    Hi,

Thanks for this article – while I’m a huge Twilight fan, I really fell in love with the house, it was nice to take a closer look at it. It’s beautiful, and, as you mentioned, the use of wood juxtaposed with the industrial grey is breathtaking, as is the landscaping and the house’s location.

One small note – it’s Edward Cullen, no “s” at the end. But, regardless, it’s still a drop-dead gorgeous house!

  12. Amanda says:

Oh my. I saw the movie and admired the rooms that were shown but wow! That is STUNNING!!! Indoor/Outdoor…Crisp, and airy but cozy. Its beautiful.

  13. caitlin says:

these house is beautiful, very homey, but yet spaceful feel. i think it is amazing for the cullens house. yes, in the books we were told that it was white, but i mean, not many withe house left. one of the only is alreayd occupied, and wouldn’t allow filming…even for twilight*sign* ha ha. I lvoe the many windows, which is somethign said in the book, i love how the bosted it up to the taste now….great job, can’t wait to see it again in new moon. except in new moon, when we see it, it may get a bit messy…..ahhhh spoil, sorry ha ha. live love twilight:)

  14. me says:

Well the inside is nice and fits the Cullen family in Twilight but I don’t like the outside especially on the first picture, the dirty grey/black looks horrible. I hardly noticed the house in the film, except when I first saw it when he’s driving his volvo, I thought woah weird/cool house. Why are there people in the kitchen, do people actually live there?! I bet some rich twilight obsessive fan buys it when the movies are over. Can’t wait for the next Twilight movie and hopefully some more scenes in the house!

  15. write4love says:

this house is awesome but it shouldnt be the cullen house! its not quaint, doesnt have the wrap around porch, too modern, the backwall isnt a giant window, and edward room isnt gold!!!

  16. Nancy Weimer says:

    Thanks I enjoyed it!

  17. Anna says:

the house is pretty, but not quite my style–i prefer more traditional architecture–but the location is amazing. while it doesn’t look at all like the cullens’ house to me, bits and pieces of the interior fit Stephenie’s description, which was how i imagined the house

  18. Ashley Cullen says:

O my god wouldnt u kill to live in this house? 1 its gorgus 2 Rob Patinson, Ashley Greene, Peter Facinelli, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser, and Stephanie Meyer walked on ur floor. 3 the movie people will continue to use it and u could easaly get signed. 4 You could give permission to the movie people make it look more like the Cullens Resadent. Yes i also agree that this house problly wasnt the best choice. O and the porch was gonna be tghe best part.

  19. […] Cullen home is featured on the Design Tavern site. Check out the extra features the house has to […]

  20. Adrina says:

This house looks amazing, i think it really suites the cullens seeing as they are quite rich. If i ever lived in a house like this i would really get lost :P.
The bathroom looks is so big and wide, its quite white but apart from that it looks so good! In the first picture the house looks beautiful but if you look at the front yard, it looks a bit trashed. But if they had the plants regrown again, the house would look so perfect even a barbie isnt good enough for it.

Wow. I didn’t know the Cullen house was that spectacular. I am and always will be a TwiHard, so at first I wasn’t very happy with the choice of the house. These pictures are amazing and have convinced me completely.
I’m not that big on architure, but I will say this house really reminds me of Falling Water House by Frank Lloyd Wright.
